Within BRRJA, your career could potentially develop past a Jail Officer. All new jail officers have the opportunity to be promoted to a ranking officer beginning with Corporal and making their way through Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, even up to Major and into Administration. In addition to rank, there are also a variety of specialized positions within our Security Division that are available to officers to work. These positions are as follows:
- Hearings Officer
- Transportation
- C.E.R.T Team
- Classification
- FTO (Field Training Officer)
- Master Officer
- Possible Rank Promotion
EXPECTATIONS
Monitor Inmates and facility
Both Direct and Indirect Supervision of inmate population
Utilize Camera and security systems throughout facility
Conduct inmate and inmate housing searches
Transport of inmates
Write detailed and accurate reports
Follow all BRRJA policy and procedures
Oversee inmate activities and programming, to include visitation
Successfully graduated the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy (16 week – including firearms and defensive tactics)
And other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Must be twenty (18) years of age or older
- Must have a high school diploma or GED (or are expected to graduate/receive GED within 90 days from the beginning of training)
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or be eligible to work in the U.S.
Must possess a valid driver’s license
Must pass extensive background check and drug screening
Ability to pass a physical
