Food Production Worker

RESPONSIBILITES:

TITLE:

Jail Officer

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

The Jail Officer position coordinates and directs the movement of inmates within the correctional setting. Work consists of the care and security of inmates within the BRRJA, as well as other duties for the operation, care and maintenance of BRRJA property.

CHAIN OF COMMAND:

The Jail Officer works under the general supervision of a corporal, sergeant or higher authority.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

This position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in the position.  The employee must be able to perform all of the duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

–         Processes inmates into custody of the BRRJA, searches inmates, takes charge of personal property, provides clothing, bedding, eating utensils, and BRRJA rules and regulations.

–          Releases inmates after properly checking records and completing proper paperwork.

–          Supervises inmates during meals, exercise, work, recreation, and related activities for conformance to BRRJA rules, regulations, and procedures.

–           Conducts periodic security checks of inmates in assigned area and on center grounds.

–           Conducts searches of inmates, BRRJA property, and visitors.

–           Maintains and updates center logs.

–           Attends to special needs of inmates.

–           Escorts and transports inmates as required.

–           Supervises inmate phone calls.

–           Distributes medication to inmates per established medical protocol.

–           Ensures the proper care and maintenance of work and recreational equipment used by inmates.

–           Supervises inmates in work details.

–           Writes inmate disciplinary reports.

–           Assures the center is in compliance with Virginia Minimum Standards.

–           Conducts regular security and sanitation inspections of the center.

–           Performs routine maintenance.

–           Issues cleaning supplies and monitors their use.

–           Acts as inmate hearings officer in disciplinary proceedings if necessary.

–           Any other duties assigned by higher authority.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

–           Knowledge of center layout and location of emergency equipment.

–           Knowledge of BRRJA standard operating procedures.

–           Knowledge of inmate rules and regulations.

–           Knowledge of BRRJA chain of command.

–           Knowledge of basic practices of modern penology as related to supervision and care of inmates.

–           Skill in defensive tactics as needed to control and physically restrain violent inmates.

–           Skill in the use of firearms, chemicals, and other weapons that are approved for use by the BRRJA.

–           Ability to read and comprehend manuals, logbooks, medical directives, court orders, etc.

–           Ability to satisfactorily complete basic jailor training to include all physical fitness requirements.

–           Ability to enforce inmate rules and regulations on a fair and consistent basis.

–           Ability to remain calm and carry out standard operating procedures under stressful and emergency situations.

–           Ability to enter information into a personal computer utilizing basic keyboarding skills.

–           Ability to perform basic first aid and CPR.

–           Ability to take orders from the chain of command and carry them out.

–           Ability to operate fire emergency equipment located within BRRJA centers.

–           Ability to write legibly, accurately and concisely.

–           Ability to communicate with staff, inmates, and the public in a tactful, direct manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

–           Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.

–           Must satisfactorily complete basic jailor training as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services within twelve (12) months of employment unless currently certified.

–           Must be a citizen of the United States or legally employable in the United States of America.

–           High school graduate or equivalent.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

–           Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.

–           Must maintain a telephone in residence for emergency contact.

–           Must be able to respond in a timely manner during emergencies.

OTHER:

This is a non-exempt position as defined in the Fair Labor Standards Act.   This is a designated position, which requires the employee to report to work under the BRRJA’s inclement weather policy.  Required to work weekends, holidays, and shift work as needed.

–           Must satisfactorily complete basic jailor training as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services within twelve (12) months of employment unless currently certified.
